Our Beliefs

As part of the body of Christ throughout history and around the world (often referred to as the small “c” catholic church), Hope Presbyterian subscribes to the two creeds that have unified the early church, and continue to unite the church today.  These are the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed, which can both be found here.

As a protestant, evangelical church we subscribe to these essentials:

  1. We believe in one true sovereign God, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, existing in unity and in the tri-personality of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  2. We believe in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, his virgin birth, his sinless life, his vicarious death, his burial and his resurrection, his ascension to heaven, and his present ministry as high priest and advocate for his people at the right hand of God.
  3. We believe in the deity and personality of the Holy Spirit, who indwells every believer.  He regenerates God’s people, giving them the strength and wisdom to trust and follow Christ in holy living, which is the necessary evidence of true faith.
  4. We believe in the divine inspiration and complete trustworthiness of the entire Bible as the Word of God.  It is without error in the original manuscripts and is the supreme authority in all matters of faith and practice.
  5. We believe that all are sinners (radically depraved), unable to please God apart from the new birth, and in need of his mercy.
  6. We believe in the unique and historical death of the Lord Jesus Christ for our sins, a voluntary substitutionary sacrifice. His perfect life and sacrificial death justifies the believer and atones for the sins of all who will trust in Him, alone, for salvation.
  7. We believe that salvation is by God alone as He sovereignly chooses those He will save – those for whom Christ died and to whom he guarantees eternal security. His choice is based on His grace, not on any human individual merit, or foreseen faith.
  8. We believe that God is gracious and faithful to His people not simply as individuals but as families in successive generations according to His Covenant promises.
  9. We believe in the one holy, universal church, which is the body of Christ, and to which all true believers belong.
  10. We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ and the bodily resurrection and judgment of all people. Death shall be no more and the redeemed will live with God eternally in a glorious New Heaven and Earth.

As part of the Presbyterian Church in America, we subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith, which is a much more full and detailed expression of our beliefs.
